I've Been Alone Since '89
2003-11-13 | 1:51 a.m.

Quickie #1: Andrew McCarthy apparently lives 6 streets up and maybe the same across from me. Stalker time.

I used the money I'd saved from the KFC debacle last night and put it towards musical entertainment in the form of rockmecanadiana. Broken Social Scene, Stars and Jason Collett were all on the bill, all acts I'd seen in the last three years, all good fun. I think I went for sentimentality's sake. And it worked.

Quickie #2: The DJ at the BSS concert tonight played NENEH CHERRY'S Buffalo Stance!!!! And Prince's Batman. Ooh yeah, ooh yeah, I wanna bust that body.

It rehashed my zest for going to concerts alone again; the pre-show discomfort at Calgary's Dears' concert and the dismality that hovered in the air during the Folk Implosion concert this year almost made me lose faith.

Alas, music can still be fun.

Quickie #3: I spotted an adorable boy who looked just like Topher Grace. He wore tan corduroys. He went to the show alone as well. I am in love. Had I a pen, I would have snuck him my email address. Yes, I am forward. Yes, this could be bold. Yes, I know not to waste time and pout for the rest of my life about things I haven't done. So there. And he likes music!

Being at the show reminded me of the days of alt.music.canada and alt.music.indie and alt.music.tmbg in the burgeoning days of the Internet and newsgroups and irc. It reminded me of the days when my top ten favourite groups list would be:

Rheostatics : They Might Be Giants : The Inbreds : Sloan : Catherine Wheel : Hayden : Local Rabbits : Big Rude Jake : The Cure : Treblecharger

It reminded me of cutting and pasting, of being able to wait in line four hours before a concert starts, of rushing to the stage for set lists, of interviewing band members for a piddly little zine article. Of meeting at least one new person at every show I'd attend. Of the zesty youthfulness of life and the stylin' cutie patooties that music oft conjures up. Of being able to stand for four hours through sometimes mediocre bands and of not having a backache after the night's proceedings.

Quickie #4: makes one of the best damn mix CDs you could ever ask for. It is on constant rotation at the store.

Aye. I love it. I must go see more music.
