A Movie, An Actor and A Concert
2003-07-27 | 10:18 a.m.
I admit it. Pirates of the Caribbean was fun. Well, let me rephrase that, and pardon me for flogging a dead horse, but Johnny Depp is the BOMB. Had he been eliminated from the flick, I don't think my eyes would have given the movie half the attention that I gave it. And no, no, no, this does not come from a girly omigodhe'ssofuckingcute fan perspective (though after the movie, I admit, I did go back to find those old sites I'd dug up about the man. And okay, I admit I used to have a poster of him on my wall circa 1990. And okay, that little thing we call a restraining order - that was ordered circa What's Eating Gilbert Grape and I'm well on my way to recovery now. Promise.); I believe he's genuinely talented. Of all the big name actors polluting Hollywood, this dude is the real thing and actually deserves his hefty salary.

My friend mentioned the movie Life or Something Like It, a flick that truly sucked the entire soul out of my body, scraped it with a grapefruit spoon, crushed it like a tossed cigarette and sent it to hell. I immediately pounced to express my dissatisfaction with the movie and then discovered her new boytoy played some stoner kid in the movie. Thankfully, she agreed the movie was horrible, but now we're both regretfully dipping back into that sordid memory of our lives to rehash this boy's character. I spent a total of four seconds attempting to do so, and then decided it wasn't worth the pain of reliving. Should I see him again, I will shrug and try to overlook the fact that he was in one of the worst movies I have ever seen since birth. Ouch!

We ended the night laying against a rock across the river from the Ani DiFranco concert, too cheap to pay to get in. We weren't alone. About 20 of us were strewn across the riverside, staring off into the purple and blue lights flashing from the stage. I'm not a big Ani DiFranco fan, but she's got some good songs and it made a perfect backdrop to the evening's conversation about life observations, interspersed with laughing and the occasional farting and animal sounds. Wonderful day, aye.
