Movie Theatre Sketchbook
2003-06-24 | 10:25 p.m.

music: "lioness" - songs: ohia

I went to see Morvern Callar this evening at the Uptown Theatre.

I got there early as always and drew a 10 minute sketch that has turned out to be one of the better ones in my collection.

It is of an Asian girl with glasses looking into her coffee cup. Her left hand is clenched against the side of her head while the other fiddles with her cup. Her legs touch at the knees and then twist outward. She is waiting for someone but she doesn't want to look eager. Looking like she doesn't care, that the only important thing in her life at that very moment is the coffee mug, how the oil of the cream is beginning to separate from the caffeinated liquid, how remarkably cold to the touch it feels against her lips. How tasteless and distant it seems. The coffee is even starting to abandon her.

She wishes she had a book, a pen, some paper, anything to divert her energy. She can't look up. It's too late in the game now, she thinks.

She must master the art of being alone and looking comfortable. But it isn't working, she thinks. I can't fool anyone here, she thinks.

I look up from my sketch pad after ten minutes and see that I am not alone. At least six other single people are sitting in random spots in the theatre. I am proud to be in this league and sit up straight in my chair as if to say, "Yes! I am here to see the movie alone as well!"

I close my pad, slip it and my pencil back into my knapsack and nestle into my seat.

I love cinemas.
